Process

On the path to a joint internationalisation strategy

Current activities

The concept and organisation of the International House are being developed during interdepartmental workshops. By September 2019, all the departments of the International House should have relocated to a single location at Bültenweg 74/75.

To further strengthen TU Braunschweig’s internationalisation and make the best use of synergies, the university considers the organisational combination of the International Office, the Language Centre, and the Research Service and EU Office in a single unit: the International House. The heads of the three concerned administrative departments develop a joint concept and submit it to the Internationalisation Committee. In September 2018, the Executive Board decides to establish the International House, entrusting Heinrich Schwabecher with its management and further strategic and organisational development.

The re-audit process:
Planning and implementation of measures

TU Braunschweig receives the re-audit results report. The HRK’s overall assessment is mostly positive, commending in particular improvements in the areas of integration measures and a welcoming culture, the work of the Internationalisation Council, and the increased visibility of the topic throughout the university. The HRK consultants see further need for improvement in the areas of internationalisation in teaching, the recruitment of international scientific staff, outgoing mobility, and strategic partnerships. In December, Vice President Prof. Dr. Katja Koch accepts a certificate for the successful completion of the re-audit.

Three consultants and two international auditors from the HRK visit Braunschweig for two days, speaking with members of the university. The interview partners are selected by the HRK. The auditors are Mrs. Sabine Pendl, Director of the Office of International Relations at the University of Graz and Vice-President of EAIE, and Prof. Dr. Marco Todorov, former Rector of the University of Ruse and former Bulgarian Minister for Science and Education.

The Internationalisation Committee compiles a final report on the re-audit process. By now, the report includes 32 individual measures:

  • 6 measures have been completed.
  • 4 measures have been made permanent fixtures.
  • 7 measures are being continued beyond their projected length of time, with the possibility of becoming permanent, ongoing measures.
  • 10 measures are in the implementation stage.
  • 4 measures have been added.
  • only 2 measures were not realised.

The Internationalisation Committee is established as the steering committee for internationalisation issues, replacing the audit team formed by Professor Dr Dieter Jahn.

The audit team compiles a detailed implementation plan with 27 individual measures in the area of internationalisation. HRK consultants support this process by coming to Braunschweig for a workshop, where they provide advice on strategically refining the planning process.

The HRK’s “Internationalisation of Universities” audit:
Stocktaking and recommendation report

Based on the recommendation report, the audit team collects initial ideas for planning measures. HRK consultants visit Braunschweig for a one-day planning workshop, advising the audit team on the selection and prioritisation of the proposed internationalisation measures. The HRK is very impressed by their dynamic progress and high quality of their work. Thanks to the advanced state of this planning, it allows TU Braunschweig to participate in the re-audit directly after concluding the initial audit process. In December, Prof. Dr. Dieter Jahn and Dr. Astrid Sebastian accept the certificate for successful completion of the HRK audit.

TU Braunschweig receives a comprehensive recommendation report compiled by the HRK based on the self-assessment report and the audit visit. The recommendation report identifies the following strategic areas for action:

  • Establish governance structures for internationalisation
  • Increase appreciation for and awareness of internationalisation
  • Establish a language policy
  • Give university partnerships a strategic direction
  • Improve mentoring and intercultural qualifications
  • Increase international visibility
  • Improve funding for internationalisation measures

Three consultants and two international auditors from the HRK visit Braunschweig for three days, speaking with members of the university. The interview partners are selected by the HRK on the basis of the self-assessment report. They encompass all of the university’s different populations. The auditors are Prof. Dr. Rolf Tarrach, Rector of the University of Luxembourg, and Prof. Dr. Marco Todorov, former Rector of the University of Ruse and former Bulgarian Minister for Science and Education.

Professor Jahn creates a working group comprising the Vice President for Strategy, faculty and research centre representatives, the International Office, the Research Service and EU Office, and the Language Centre. HRK consultants visit TU Braunschweig for a one-day kick-off workshop.

The audit team subsequently holds a two-day working session at Burg Warberg and compiles TU Braunschweig’s self-assessment report. This report takes stock of the university’s characteristics and internationalisation topics. It provides a detailed examination of the strengths, weaknesses and potential for development in this area.
